A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
