The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his designs for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to build it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and this week a study forecast his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no other president would have conceived – solo demolishing major areas of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.
We went from 'the humble will receive the world' to 'the meek shall die of cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the established notion regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and because the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or nones. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to avoid undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his doctrine is about love for fellow humans, especially for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and direct fact that the Savior from scripture advocates for a type of profound affection centered on the poor has consistently rendered Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest Among Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to see the determined opposition regarding Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We must have to maintain it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the finest aspects in US history.

America is best defended, in other words, through connection to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured through connection to elements that cause it to be distinctive and beautiful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it imply pretending the most damaging regarding America and religious tradition never occurred; it signifies both meekness and faith, a blend that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
