View Christopher Nolan's This Epic Trailer the Way It Wasn't Meant to Be Seen.

Christopher Nolan's legendary action saga, The Odyssey, stands as a movie audiences have been anticipating since its announcement. It firmly sits among the most hotly anticipated motion pictures coming next year. As a pre-Christmas treat, a trailer has finally arrived, though it's hampered due to the platform's low-quality encoding—perhaps explaining the director's choice to restrict the trailer solely for theatrical audiences.

A First Glimpse of the Stellar Ensemble

The debut footage showcases Matt Damon in the role of Odysseus. We also see Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. During an emotional scene, the character pleads with Odysseus to promise he will return, to which he look up and question what happens if he cannot. The trailer also offers a quick, obscured look at Polyphemus the Cyclops, whose flock are taken by the hero and his men on their treacherous voyage.

Based upon a cornerstone of Western literature, The Odyssey follows the epic journey of the legendary King of Ithaca. After his triumph at Troy, as told within the companion epic, the king faces a long and perilous return to his homeland.

Legendary Obstacles and a Star-Studded Lineup

Along his path, Odysseus confronts numerous obstacles and legendary creatures. These include the enchantress Circe, who transforms men into swine, and the deceptive Sirens. Despite these trials, his sworn oath is to do whatever it takes to reunite with his wife and son on his home island.

This film's ensemble is remarkably star-studded. Joining Damon, Holland, and Hathaway are Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.

A Story Repeatedly Told

Homer's epic has seen many reinterpretations over the years. These range from modern retellings to a 1999 ballet. There has even been adapted into a musical called Epic: The Musical, released in the form of a multi-part album series.

A full-length preview was long awaited following the project's reveal and a brief teaser which was initially shown exclusively in theaters. That teaser later made its way onto the internet soon after.
